  • Therapy Dog Training Class (Dover, DE)

    This training class includes 7 sessions.  The Handler's class is part of the class and not a prerequisite.  

    Prerequisites:

    • Dog must be at least 9 months old by the first day of class
    • Dogs must have passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test sponsored by the American Kennel Club by the first day of class
    • Dog must have lived in your household for at least 6 months before taking class
    • A copy of a current rabies vaccination must be provided by the first day of class
    • Dogs must currently have reliable basic obedience skills and appropriate temperament, including:
    1. Sit, Down, Stay on command
    2. Walk on loose leash (no pulling handler, or dragging behind)
    3. Display interest in interacting with unfamiliar people


    Class Goals:

    • To prepare teams to pass the therapy dog evaluation
    • To learn new training skills that can be used in therapy work, including dealing with distractions
    • Meet other NCTD volunteers, and learn from their visiting experiences
    • Gain exposure and a level of comfort around hospital equipment
    • Improve communication and control with your dog
    • To provide opportunities for interaction with successful therapy dog teams


    Attendance Requirement:

    • Teams must attend 6 of the 7 classes to be eligible for the evaluation
    • The seventh class is a community outing so that teams may practice visiting skills in a public setting.  The date, time, and location of this class will be determined at a later time.

  • Handler's Class (Laurel)

    This course is a prerequisite to beginning the therapy dog training classes. 

    This one-day intensive training class is designed for prospective therapy dog handlers and is taught by NCTD instructors. This interactive class features lecture, class discussion, role play, demonstration, and videos. The class will cover topics such as therapy dog registration requirements, health care settings and populations, visiting tips and techniques, and managing stress and difficult situations.

    NCTD sponsors the Handler's Class in the Washington area three or four times each year. Early registration is appreciated.

    The fee for this course includes a resource guide which will be distributed at the class.

    • Registrations are accepted up to one week before class is held
    • Payment must be received prior to attending class
    • The training facilities are accessible for those with disabilities. If you have any special needs, please advise NCTD ahead of time.
