National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. (NCTD) is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization whose mission is, "To bring comfort, healing, and learning to children and adults with certified therapy animals." NCTD accomplishes this by providing animal-assisted therapy and animal-assisted activities to improve the lives of clients in hospitals, nursing and assisted living homes, crisis centers, schools, and other institutions. We strive to provide the highest standards of service and safety for clients, staff, handlers, and animals. Our therapy animals are owned, trained, and loved by our human volunteers.

NCTD inaugurated our full range of volunteer therapy animal services in 1990, and we have consistently been recognized as an excellent animal therapy organization by the many facilities we serve. We visit medical and psychiatric patients, stroke and trauma clients, residents in facilities for the elderly, palliative care patients, victims of domestic violence, homeless families, and troubled teenagers.

We also have an active R.E.A.D. Program which encourages children to read to our dogs in order to improve their reading motivation, fluency and confidence.

If you’re interested in volunteering, visit our Volunteer section for information about qualifications, process, and fees. NCTD holds frequent training and evaluation classes throughout the Washington, D.C. area. Please visit our Calendar of Events for further information. If you represent a facility interested in our services, check the Facility information page of our website.
